To paraphrase teacher Brandy Young...Inspired by other teachers who are making this transition across the country and after much research, we have decided as a 4th grade team that our students will not be given much homework. Homework will consist of work the student did not finish during the school day, short review activities that you can do together as a family, or a fun project linked to the arts or STEM that lets students explore their creativity. Research has been unable to prove that homework improves student performance. Instead, I encourage you to look at the list below to spend your evenings doing things that are proven to correlate with student success.

-providing a calm space to focus/relax

-eating dinner as a family

-playing outside

-getting them to bed early

-reading aloud to your student and having them read to you daily—keep track on your student’s reading log :)

-involving them in cooking and measuring

-playing games like…scrabble, boggle, cranium, brain quest, apples to apples, pictionary, taboo, mastermind, chess, checkers, othello, clue, risk, dominos, connect 4, yahtzee, uno, and scattergories that use math, strategy, communication and/or word development

-check your student’s backpack periodically. Many school announcements and important papers come home this way and we rely on this method of communication to link school and home.
